Constance Wu, star from Crazy Rich Asians, was recently nominated for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy. Crazy Rich Asians itself was nominated for Best Musical or Comedy. This is a INCREDIBLE achievement! The most recent person of Asian descent nominated this category was Yvonne Elliman, in 1974, almost 50 years ago. In even more exciting news, Sandra Oh will be co-hosting the Golden Globes in 2019. She is the FIRST Asian American woman to host the Golden Globes. History is being made, and the hope is that more strides will occur to create more representation so more Asian stories can be shared.
Previously to this, I knew a lot about this topic. Following Crazy Rich Asian news since the announcement that the book was going to become a movie, I am so incredibly proud to see that Asians have come so far. I had seen this announcement this previous Thursday, and was so excited. I wanted to write about this topic so other people could see the news, but I actually had to do a little searching to find a news article, which saddens me. This is so incredibly important, it is history being made as we speak. I can relate Crazy Rich Asians to Joy Luck Club, being that both are full Asian casts and both have made strides into creating Asian Representation. Crazy Rich Asians is the most recent all Asian American cast since Joy Luck Club in 1993, about 25 years ago.
I'm really glad that Asian people in the movie industry are getting the recognition they deserve. I like what you said about how they are making history right now. Very well-written!
