Summary: Climate change is extending far beyond the threat of melting polar ice caps. Studies show that it's putting a danger on life in oceans, too. This new study published in the science journal Nature on Wednesday found that the ocean's worldwide oxygen content declined by more than 2% between 1960 and 2010. Our scientists have long warned about the potentially deadly consequences of the ocean's declining oxygen levels on marine life, and its resulting impact on humans. Using information on oxygen, temperature and other factors relating to the world's oceans, they mapped it around the globe and estimated the overall oxygen loss. "We were able to document the oxygen distribution and its changes for the entire ocean for the first time. These numbers are an essential prerequisite for improving forecasts for the ocean of the future," wrote Schmidtko. Oxygen in the world's oceans is not evenly distributed, and the 2% drop represents just an average of all the globe's oceans together. In some parts of the world, there has been a much steeper decline of oxygen levels over the past five decades. The North Pacific wasb where the largest volume of oxygen was lost. The largest percentage was lost in the Arctic Ocean.
Analysis: This article was published by Justin Heifetz from CNN on February 16, 2017. The author uses a third person point of view to convey an unbiased article. Additionally, I had a little previous knowledge of these dangers to our ecosystem, so this article made me realize how important our conservation methods are. If we could have maintained great conservation methods while avoiding the use of fossil fuels, we might have been able to maintain a healthy environment and save many species. This article was written for any citizen of the US, or the world who want to keep our Oceans safe and clean. This instance can connect directly to Teddy Roosevelt's conservation policies issued during the Progressive Era up until the 1920’s. These legislatures were passed directly for this reason that we are forced to deal with today.

This is devastating to hear, because many people don't realize how damaging humans actually are to this earth. Therefore it's important to conserve, and to develop new ways to conserve to make the environment better.
ReplyDeleteThis type of news is always so hard to read. It's going to take a lot of effort by a lot of people to get the environment back in shape.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible! It's so sad to hear things like this occur to our environment that most people are unaware of.
ReplyDeleteWe are changing the actually chemical composition of the earth. One day millions of years from non, when we are dead and gone, whoever has the means to will be able to see the mark we left, a layer in the earth's crust.
