the Parents of Fatima Larios, a Chadron College softball player are suing the college, alleging the college didn't do anything to prevent their daughter's death. The parents say that their daughter was physically and emotionally abused by her boyfriend, a football player, for several months before her death. Larios had not told any authority at the college about the abuse, but had told her teammates. Her parents claim that the college should have looked more into the lives of its students.
I think that the loss of a child is a terrible thing to experience, and that the parents have every right to be devastated, but I think that the college did everything it could, being given no information about the abuse. I think that reporting domestic abuse needs to become more normalized in the United States, because maybe then she wouldn't have been afraid to report her abuse, and might still be alive.

My heart goes out to this family. However, my heart breaks that we have another set of parents who thinks it is the "schools" responsibility to raise their children. If the parents knew what was happening with her, it was their place to remove her from that school and get her the help she needed.
ReplyDeleteI look forward to hearing how this one plays out.
I can understand that telling authority about these situations can be tough, however, having multiple teammates know about the abuse and not one alert someone is frightening. Colleges need to set up a comfortable, safe way for students to openly talk to counselors about anything that is or can potentially harm them or someone else.
