Victoria Garza "Confusion, Horror, and Herroism in Oregon Shooting"

Yet another shooting occurred last Thursday at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg, Oregon. Christopher Harper-Mercer shot his teacher Mr. Levine as well as killing 8 people and injuring 9 others. Mercer died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Guns have obviously proven to be a very deadly thing when put into the wrong hands. It is tragic that these sort of occurrences seems to have become a common thing. Recently, I feel like shootings have become much more frequent and I don't understand the cause. It seems like a lot of these shooters don't actually have a distinct motive or purpose and are taking innocent lives for no reason. It's absolutely terrible that some people happen to be in the wrong place at the wrong time and their lives are taken because of it. The amount of courage shown by those who tried to stop this gunman or protect the lives of others at this shooting and at other shootings is incredibly honorable. Although there is really no way to prevent this completely, I think we should at least try to make an attempt at avoiding these tragic shootings in the future. There have been numerous murders, shootings, and acts of terrorism that have occurred throughout U.S. history, and they are still continuing to this day.

  1. It has shown, that there have been more shootings than days in this year. If that is not alarming, I don't know what is. I think what we are all waiting for is a compromise that protects our citizens, but doesn't infringe on rights. I just want to see a stop to these horrific shootings.

  2. Yet another shooting is right. It is numbing to see similar articles headlining our news every day, and I wish that America would realize that this isn't going to change if we don't do anything to change it!

  3. I do too believe that the number of shootings in America have been rising. Gun control could be a great thing if people actually cooperated with it. Madeline Jones 4th period

I cannot believe that shootings have become so common. We definately need to do something about it. I cant believe that it has grown in number so quick. This is really scary.

  6. As Americans we have come to a point where these school shootings are just another thing that happens in life and that its not such a big deal when it happens, but this is very serious and we need to take more precautions to diminish these shootings.
