Erasure in McGraw-Hill Textbooks Tymie Jadagu 6th P

Article: McGraw-Hill to rewrite textbook after mom's complaint - CNN.com
Summary: A Houston area mother reached out to Textbook publisher McGraw-Hill after she read something she considers "erasure". A chapter about the slave trade, used words like "immigrants" and "workers". She did not agree with the word choice, because those words imply they chose to migrate here, and that they were paid for the work they did. She claims that the word choice is an example of white-washing, and does not adequately reflect slavery. The publishing company has since replaced those words in the online text, and will update the future versions of the textbook. Some are still upset, because their schools can not afford the updated version.
Analysis: This relates directly back to US history, because the slavery took place in many places, America being one of them. Although slavery has ended, it's effects are still wreaking havoc on our nation. Although it was a low point in our country, it is not enough to say that it is over. We need to remember it, for what it truly was, and how horrific it was, so that something of that nature never happens again. We need to overcome, not erase. I'm glad the mom pointed out what she did and that the textbook was willing to change it.

  1. It's very upsetting to hear that professionals scrutinized this textbook yet never managed to see and understand this.

  2. It's nice to hear that some people still have real knowledge about U.S. History and stand up for what they believe is right. The fact that the Textbook company took what the woman said seriously and did what they could to change it is absolutely great. Madeline Jones 4th Period

I think it is good that McGraw-Hill reacted so swiftly to the problem but, there shouldn't have been a problem in the first place.

The fact that there was a problem in the first place is sad. I applaud this mom for reaching out to them and for the comapny to re-print. It shows that we are on the right path.
