Sophie Kurzius (8th), College Shooting, Student Kills Nine

On October 3, 2015 in Roseburg, Oregon, a student began shooting at Umpqua Community College. The gunman first opened fire on an English class and continued his rampage throughout the college until the police showed up six minutes later. Once the police arrived the shooter only exchanged fire with the authorities briefly before he pulled the gun on himself. The gunman, Chris Harper-Mercer, killed nine students at the college. After the calamity, investigators searched Harper-Mercer's house and found fourteen firearms in his home. All weapons were legally purchased from federally licensed firearms dealers. This article was written by Sara Sidner, Faith Karimi, and Kayung Lah on October 3, 2015 at 5:14 P.M. I think the article was written to express the terrible happening to the public and inform people of how dangerous it can be to trust someone with firearms. This article is significant because it directly proves how people who meet the guidelines to own a weapon aren't necessarily trustworthy with a gun.

  1. It is scary how many schools are threatened by gunmen. I think gun control needs to be tightened to protect today's students. Hearing things like this makes me feel unsafe at school.

  5. This is terrible... The amount of school shootings that have occurred over the past year is horrifying, it's terrible that this isn't receiving more media coverage - some people seem to have desensitized themselves to such horrors and now it may just become another statistic. I'm all for the right to bear arms, but it's things like these that also make me want much, much more gun control.
