Most people think slavery is a thing of the past. But it is still there today. In sweatshops in Bangladesh and India, or in the cotton fields in Uzebekistan and Turkmenistan. Cotton, nicknamed "White Gold", is picked by thousands of peoples in unsafe conditions. The money made by the cotton is almost all given to the social elite, impoverishing the population. The state owns most of the land in both countries. The state will lease the land to farmers with an annual quota, and if the quota isn't met, the government will harshly punish the farmers. The pickers are chosen by the government, and every year doctors, teachers, etc are made to leave their jobs and work during harvest season. The state silences anyone who speaks out.
Analysts-
I can't believe this is still going on. How are there still countries that have slavery and how come no-one has stopped them, like the UN. Is this not violation of Human Rights? This is disappointing.

Countries like Uzebekistan have extremely unstable governments and most work around slavery is kept on the down low by corporations. Since the government is so corrupt and unstable no countries or organizations really want to tangle with that. However, something must be done (Zoe Roberts 3rd period)
ReplyDeleteAlthough it may possibly be the fastest way to make money in those countries, slavery is uncalled for. These countries' economic tactics are as corrupt as their governments and both need tweaking.
