Oregon Shooting- Katie Schell (flex)

Original article: updated Thursday 10/1/15 written by- Dana Ford

On Thursday a man went into Oregon's Umpqua Community College and open fired, injuring 7 and killing 10 people. The gunman is dead and the article does not mention his name, but it does however tell us that he was 20 years old. Many accounts were given in the original article on what people heard and how they reacted. All of these personal statements I found to be so scary and frightening.  Police are targeting social media to help solve the identity of the deceased shooter. The whole community of Roseburg, Oregon is shaken and rightfully so. Resident Rick Francona tells authorities, "This is so out of character for this whole area." The impression I got from the article was that Roseburg was a very peaceful, small, and serene town. I cannot imagine what the citizens of this small town are going through nor can I imagine the sorrow of the families who lost their loved ones to the shooter.

This is definitely not the first time this has happened on a school campus. I simple do not understand why anyone would ever feel compelled to go into a school of completely innocent people and start shooting. The scary thing is that this could happen literally anywhere. I mean sure, schools have developed a safety protocol to prevent these things but is that enough? Is there really anyway that we can assure the safety of our kids at school? I just hope that the sadness and pain of these families and citizens affected by this disaster will heal with time.

  1. It's crazy how many school shootings have happened in the U.S. in 2015. Since the shooting at Sandy Hook, there have been about 142 school shootings in the U.S. alone. I don't know what should be done about the problem America has, but I do know something has to be done. Innocent students can't keep having to go through this trauma.

  2. I agree with how someone could ever be so compelled to do something like this. I mean its frightening and sad to think that these innocent college students were living normal lives just like us that morning, but died at the hands of evil. This whole thing doesnt settle well with me at all.
