Many schools in the U.S. are trying to incorporate healthy foods into the school lunches. Schools in Oregon, Florida, and D.C. are receiving positive feedback as a result. The new lunches are not only healthy but save the schools money by buying from local vendors. This is a lot greener than having food be shipped from three states away. Some schools even have class gardens where the vegetables are used in school meals. Elementary schools are cutting the fruits and veggies into bite size bits to encourage healthy snacking. And some are providing to-go containers for those who can't get healthy meals at home.
This event is similar to school reforms in the 1800s. During this time, most kids worked instead of going to school. Wealthy children were the exception to this, but it was mostly boys who were educated.  Horace Mann started a public school program, to allow every child (with the exception of children of color) the right to be educated. This enforced the idea that children should be required to attend school.

  1. That's really cool that people are trying to improve school lunches! Today actually, I was interviewed by a DISD intern on the food we serve at school. I hope they take into account what everyone says and finds a way to make healthier, tastier, and just as cost effective food.

  2. Even though can be slightly suspicious, it's free food that the district is providing. If I'm honest, DISD does spend money on inefficient things but at least they've provided something everyone can benefit- Cassidy Jones
