Kenley Turner 3rd period- Apple Bans hundreds of iphone apps that secretly gathered personal info

Summery: Apple has banned many iphone apps that gathered personal information from consumers. The app developers used a Chinese software called Youmi, so when they put ads in their apps, it collected personal information as extreme as iphone serial number when people downloaded it. The issue was discovered by sourcedna on Sunday. Apple is currently trying to resolve the issue, and prevent future incidents. All apps using this software has been banned, even though it is not the developers fault. although Apple is trying to prevent future scandals, many similar ones have occured in the past.

Analysis: It is scary to know that our privacy is being violated. It makes me think how simply the government can unlock information from us if they wanted to. Who knows if they are, or are not. This incident reminds me of how extreme countries like North Korea work. Nothing is private in their counrty. However, do we know if anything is private in ours? The difference could be that in North Korea, there is swift and immidiate punishment for something unpatriotic. In America, it could be that the punishment is slower and timely. Most people in America have one of three to four phone companies, or some kind of smart phone. Examples such as this article could explain why that may be dangerous.

  1. I agree we buy these products for the fact that it is a sense of "privacy" but to unfortunately there is no such thing as privacy anymore.

  2. This is just one of the classic risks of social media. When we put our information out there, we have to be alert for fraud. You can't walk into a crowd and expect privacy.
