Victoria Garza "Tennessee county's commissioners vote against raising Confederate flag"

Greene County, Tennessee recently considered raising the confederate flag over their county courthouse. The results showed that 20 of the county commissioners voted against it and only one voted in favor of it.

From this article, you could tell that there were opposing views on this topic. Buddy Randolph, the only commissioner who voted in favor of the flag, obviously supports the confederate flag. He states that the flag represents the heritage and history of the county and that the flag serves as a reminder of those who fought for the South. On the other hand, Richard Hood, a retired history teacher, countered this statement, saying Greene County was, in fact, anti-confederate. Several other commissioners were also appalled by the idea of the confederate flag being flown over their county courthouse. I personally don't understand why there would be a need to raise the flag present day. I know that individuals are free to believe what they want, but I think this flag holds ties to slavery and inequality. To me, raising the flag would indicate an inclination towards those beliefs, which is unsettling among a large number of people. This relates to U.S. history because it has to do with the flags and beliefs of the Confederacy in the Civil War.

  1. Why are so may states wanting to just put up the confederate flag even when it is offensive to some people. It baffles me

  2. I'm glad that they decided not to raise the flag because the history behind the flag is very offensive. I don't think the confederate flag is at all appropriate for this day and age. -claudia Anthony
