Erin McElhone 3rd Period:Student charged with attempted murder

In the Harrisburg High School shooting, that occurred on September 30, a sixteen year old student, Mason Buhl shot his principal, Kevin Lein, and because he is facing a felony the state of South Dakota he must stand trial as an adult. Mason wounded his principal in the arm, but no one else was hurt. The assistant principal and the school's athletic director we able to hold the boy boy until the authorities had arrived.

Many times throughout history violence has occurred after a disagreement, luckily in this case only one person was hurt. However, when the colonists disagreed with England about taxes the fatalities were a lot more than just one. This article tells the reader that Mason was "quiet, (and) respectful as he responded to questions during his initial court hearing." This allows the reader to think that this boy is sorry for his actions and that he mentally sane. When in reality this teenager probably has some, at least minor, mental health issues. I think, another issue with this article is that it only slightly touches on the point that this sixteen year old boy is being given punishments that an adult would be given, as I was reading the report I wished that they had included some of the common sentences for adults in South Dakota as well as some teenager sentences.

  1. The percentage of teenage shooters from 1970 to now is ridiculous and it has to be stopped.
