For Teachers Working Through DACA, a Bittersweet Start to the School Year

Jaime Ballesteros, a sixth grade science teacher, had taught his students a “world of possiblity”. However, instead of teaching his students about solids, liquids, and gasses, he broke down at his desk crying. He is one of the 800,000 DACA recipients who face “uncertain futures” due to Trump ending the program. According to the recent announcment, DACA recipients are going to be covered until their permit is expired.

I believe that there is no point in displacing nearly a million people because others think that these innocent people are a threat to our “country”. This country was built on immigration and white supremecy and to think these immigrants are bad people because they came here illegally as children is sickening and irrational.

  1. This article has me feeling upset about what the DACA law will cause for the fate of people such as this teacher. No one should ever have to worry about where they belong.

  2. America was built on the principle of justice and equality for all. However, Trump has chosen not to follow this core set of values and has decided to do "what is best for the economy." This, however, is not the case.

  3. It is easy to look at DACA as a policy and vote to repeal it however when you see these personal stories it becomes a much harder issue. It will be interesting to see what will come of it in the coming months.
