Protest at UNC to oppose Silent Sam plan- Paige Aleman

The planned protest at UNC began quietly outside the downtown post office at 7 p.m. as a result of university’s proposal Monday to house the toppled statue of Silent Sam, a bronze statue of a Confederate soldier, inside a $5.3 million history and education center, to be built at the edge of campus.

This article was created December 3, 2018 at 8:36 pm. After all of the vandalism the statue of Silent Sam had endured they wanted to move the nagging reminder of a time when people of color were degraded from being human beings to objects, to a building that would cost $5.3 million. The funding for such a building would come from a new student fee they were planning to impose, as if the students (probably) aren't in enough debt already. My question is, who in their right mind would want to pay extra money that they may not have in order to appease the people that it doesnt effect?

  1. I feel like this is so confusing and the situation makes no logical sense in so many ways that I am just confused as to why it's even being considered in the first place. I feel that I need to be more informed on these decisions before I comment any more about why it's ridiculous, but I'm just sayin'.

  2. Personally, I don’t feel like this article gave a lot of information and I was confused about what the issue was. After reading other articles I now understand the problem. I understand why many people are upset by this because some people see it as white supremacy while others see it as a remembrance for confederate soldiers. I don’t really think a statue is worth all the money they’ve spent trying to keep it intact.

  3. I'm glad people are finally standing up and protesting in what they believe in. The fact that we've had to deal with this for so long and that someone is taking their time and effort into bettering the world is good.

  4. You make a great point. I believe the main part of the issue is the new building, because students shouldn't have to pay for such expenses. However, I do think the statue should remain in an educational and/or historical facility because no matter what happened we have to remember our history so as not to repeat it. It should be kept as a reminder of what we should not do again and what our predecessors did wrong. I understand where the protestors are coming from because the statue will probably be in honor of the man, but if they were to hypothetically structure it in a way that served as a warning, it could work. But this could all happen without building a whole new sight and taking money from students.
