Chloe Meinershagen - Sexual Violence in South Sudan

https://www.cnn.com/2018/12/01/africa/south-sudan-women-raped-msf-intl/index.html

In South Sudan over 100 women and girls have been raped, robbed, and beat in a 10 day period in November. South Sudan, being the youngest country in the world, is suffering from much violence, suffering, hunger, and war. Nearly four million citizens have abandoned their homes. The local state minister of information denies the accounts, claiming that South Sudan has protection for its people and the extremes of the report are exaggerated. Needless to say, many women have been whipped, beaten, abused, and raped, and it needs to be stopped.

Previously to this report, I was unaware of the conflict in South Sudan, nor did I realize it was the youngest country in the world, however I was aware of the general violence that surrounds Africa. I cannot help but feel incredibly awful for the women and children living in South Sudan, and I wish there was a way to fix the conflict.  This article is very important to show that sexual violence has not stopped, ever. With the MeToo movement in America, there is hope for a lowered violence rate for Americans, but we cannot then forget about the raging abuse in many different countries. I can compare this event to the Rwandan Genocide, which occurred in 1994. During this time, there was incredible amounts of murder, rape, violence, and overall terror. Although this current conflict is not as extreme, it is definitely a horrible ongoing conflict for South Sudan citizens.

  1. I would think that there would be stricter laws in the "youngest country" but I guess thats not the case her. NO WHERE IS SAFE, WERE THERE IS NO VIOLENCE!

  2. I feel so badly for the women and children living in this country as well. I think that this article brings to light the issues that go one across the world that really need our attention and our assistance. I hope that this improves for these people and that they can escape this terrible violence.
