11 Year Old Boy Shot at Sleepover - Sloan Daley

A mother wants to raise awareness about gun safety after her son shot another child while at a sleep over at a friend’s house.
The shooting happened at a home in Corder back in August. While this event happened  a few months ago, the topic the mother is fighting for is still very relevant. Melissa Syler, the mother of Camron, is speaking out. She tells her son that these are important lessons she wish she would have taught him sooner, but she rightfully never assumed that her 11 year old son would be in a situation where a gun would be in his hands. This event happened because Camron was over at his friends house with his parent that was a police officer. There was a gun out in the bed and Camron picked it and and did not know what he was doing. The trigger went off in his hand and hit his friend in the shoulder. He was okay and had a surgery and is completely healthy now. Melissa is actively working to make a positive difference to enforce gun laws.

My Source

After so many crazy stories about gun laws and multiple opinions on what to do about them, this is one that I have never heard of. This story reminds me off so many books and movies where guns easily and accidentally go off. Gun laws and gun violence are some of the most controversial topics, but personally I think a lot of this story was the parents fault for the leaving a gun on their bed.

  1. The fact that this can happen to us scares me so much, because no matter how much damage guns cause to our society, nothing changes. President Trump has even said that - and I'm paraphrasing - "guns aren't the issue." How is that even remotely possible?

  2. I agree. I completely support the movement for more and better gun control for our country, and I am happy to see this mother taking initiative and trying to make a difference by using this story. However, in this case, I believe this was really the parent’s fault for leaving the gun out in an easy to reach place. I understand that it is necessary for police officers to carry guns but think they should know where to put them, so guns are stored safely. Lily Philips

  3. Chloe Meinershagen - I find this case very interesting, but yet another really important reason that we need to improve at least something about the way Americans handle guns. I mean, come on, you can get a gun before you can have a sip of alcohol. Does that make any sense??

  4. This is a mistake that shouldn't have happened because the gun should have been out of reach.

  5. I'm sure that the officer felt guilty that they had left the gun there and unfortunately now their son is probably paralyzed by now.

  7. I completely agree. There shouldn’t have been a gun laying around in the first place and gun violence will always be a contreversial topic. Guns should be dealt with in a more safe way. -Lesly Marquez
