Isabella Hambleton- West Virginia Teachers strike

For eight days now, teachers in West Virginia have been on strike because their demands haven't been met for better pay and better benefits. Almost 277,000 students have not been able to attend school because about 22,000 teachers have joined in and walked out. The teachers are saying they will not return to work until they receive at least a 5% raise in their paycheck. This strike could stretch on for a while if the conference committee doesn't meet soon. One teacher said that the Senate could've made a decision but they are "holding our students hostage" and that they are also fighting for the "future of our students".
This article, written by Sarah Jorgensen and Ralph Ellis, gives us details about the ongoing strike and what has been happening. The teachers in West Virginia are among the lowest paid educators in the United States. This strike could die down or could go on for much longer but a con of this is that students have not been in school for eight days now and that could become much longer. Students aren't learning what they are supposed to and if it stretches out to be a long ongoing strike they could all fall behind. Hopefully this problem is resolved so that the teachers get their raise and students can go back to school.

  1. Does the West Virginia Senate not care for the education of students and welfare of their teachers? They just need to hurry up and raise the teacher's pay, and all goes back to what it was. Easy as that. (Usually not, Don't quote me on this.)

  2. Gears need to be turning if the teachers have been doing this for a while. So many children are not being educated and teachers really do deserve more pay.

  3. I love that these teachers are standing up for higher wages! it's very unfortunate that these kids are out of school and falling behind, but if the legislators wanted to protect them and put them back in school, they would raise the pay.

  4. Things need to get moving on the teacher's pay wages because it is not ok for these students to be out of school this long.

It's amazing to see these teachers exercising their rights. It's rather sad for the students, falling behind, but what the teachers are doing it's important. Being a teacher is such an important job, and they deserve higher pay. Education is so important, and I feel that sometimes law makers push it aside with things like budget cuts. We as people, or a nation, cannot grow if our education and teachers are hindered.

  6. It's good that they're being persistent, however this could have a negative effect on the students because they might fall behind with losing that many days of school.
