A new Christmas Coca-Cola ad has offended many people. The commercial shows a young, pretty white couple do their "Christmas deed" and give Coca-Cola bottles to the Mixe indigenous people in Totontepec. Many people find this commercial racist and discriminatory towards the indigenous people in the ad. Some activists said that the commercial reinforced stereotypical ideas that indigenous people were subordinate to white people. Because of the many complaints, Coca-Cola quickly took down the ad. Turns out, the Mixe people actually had a diabetes problem due to all of the soda that they drank, which is extremely sugar-filled.

I think that it is good that the indigenous people are speaking up about the discrimination that they feel and the racism that they believe is on the ad. Another reason that this commercial is angering people is because this can be related to history, to colonialism. The events in the as are too similar to what actually happened, in which white people go into the home village of natives and try to enforce their ways because they thing their ways and customs are better.

It's very upsetting that the sharing of Coke resulted in diabetes- I feel distraught for the indigenous people who clearly are able to fend for themselves.

All I know is diabetes sucks. They were trying to do a good thing, but you know... Failed horribly. As corporations do when they don't think things through.

I agree with you. The commercial enforces racism we've been consciously/unconsciously taught since childhood.
ReplyDeleteAds should be thoroughly thought about before they are aired on TV. They could be a tad offensive to some but extremely offensive for others. I think it's best to keep the commercials neutral!!
ReplyDeleteI understand that this could be interpreted many different ways but I feel like we have a little bit bigger problems to worry about. But Coke reacted quickly without any debate which is how problems like these should be handled, I'm sure it wasn't meant to be offensive.

I didn't see the commercial, but Coca Cola is such a big company with expensive advertising I'm sure, so it surprises me that nobody shut it down because they probably wasted a lot of money on that ad.
