On Tuesday, China will be issuing their first red alert on account of the hazardous pollution levels. But the thing is these levels are more than just hazardous. They're intoxicating. The smog is 25% times more than the acceptable standard set by the World Health Organization and as of right now the country is in an orange alert, the second highest. The alert will be from Tuesday to Friday in which school is canceled, restricted car use, and no outdoor construction or other outdoor polluting activities such as barbecues and fireworks are permitted.
I think it's good that they're doing something about this. I don't really know enough about the subject to say "it's about time" or "after all they've been doing I'm sorry they had to take this extreme measure", but I am sorry they had to take it in the first place. Even if not thoroughly educated on the subject, it seems to be common knowledge since 5th grade that China had some pollution problems. The picture included was really intense and very telling. It showed a girl with a mask walking around the capital. This picture was already bad enough, but to know that it's only going to get worse was the worst part. China is the world's largest green house emitter and will reach its peak in 2030. My question is: I they predict it's only going to get worse, why is it only lasting three days? Are they going to see how the run goes and then go from there? How are they preparing for the next 15 years? How will the smog effect the population and the country itself? Will the rest of the world respond? This synthesizes to the industrial revolution when all the factories started popping up. I don't think they really had any idea how it would lead to a chain reaction of polluting the environment. It really helped out the efficiency of the work force but we need to learn when to stop. As we can see from China, it will only get works.

i have known that the air has been bad all around there for a long time
ReplyDeleteSince they're such a large producer of worldwide goods many of the greenhouse gases and smog from the factories have settled over the area. I'm glad that they're acknowledging this but they should have issued this warning a long time ago. In countries around that area it's a normal fashion to wear surgical masks to block out the smog. Better late then never though, I hope they're able to do something about this.
