Janice Kaplan's article "What Made Lin-Manuel Miranda the $625,000 'Genius' Behind 'Hamilton?" was published by The Daily Beast on September 29, 2015. Star of "Hamilton, " Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also wrote the lyrics, the music, and the dialogue for the hit musical, was one of the 24 recipients of the MacArthur Foundation Fellowship, otherwise known as the genius grant. He will receive $625,000 with no obligations. "Hamilton" just recently came to Broadway, but it is already the 2nd top-grossing musical in history. It is sold out through the end of the year.
Miranda deserves this award. It is amazing that he created an incredibly successful musical out of a very historical story. "Hamilton" tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one the our founding fathers, and his struggle to lay down the foundation for the United States. Hamilton really shaped our nation today by leading the Annapolis Convention, which called for the Philadelphia Convention, at which our constitution today was written and agreed upon. Many people might find this story dull and uninteresting, but Miranda saw the importance of the story and made something out of it that everyone can enjoy and learn from. Because of that, he has definitely earned this award.
