On Thursday, a shooting rampage took place at an Oregon community college. The gunman who shot and killed nine people and injured nine others was said to have 14 firearms, all of which were purchased legally by the shooter or a family member in recent years. The shooter was killed after a firefight with police, but it's still unclear as to whether the gunman turned a weapon on himself or was killed by an officer. After the shooting, President Barack Obama told the nation, "There is a gun for roughly every man, woman and child in America. So how can you, with a straight face, make the argument that more guns will make us safer?" After yet another mass shooting, the numbers of gun violence have many Americans worried about the USA's intimate relationship with firearms.
Studies show that US civilians own about 270 million guns. That's almost the population of the world's fourth most-populated country, Indonesia. In addition to that, in the US guns are used in homicides more often than in many other countries. America ranks number one in firearms per capita, and that says something about our country. This issue regarding gun usage has been a problem for years and has been addressed several times but, no action has been taken. Although in the US we do have the right to bear arms, this is a privilege that many Americans are abusing. I believe that there should be more intense background checks when buying a gun. This would ensure that guns only belong to those who are responsible enough to own them. If action isn't taken to stop these massacres from happening, they aren't going to stop. The US has had 51 mass shootings since 1997 and this number will continue to grow until something is done to stop these tragedies.

I completely agree with you. This isn't about infringing on people's rights, it's about protecting others.
