Mykaela Johnson
Period 1
Umpqua Community College
On Friday, October 2, a student at Umpqua Community College opened fire and killed nine people from the ages of 18-67. Chris Harper-Mercer, the shooter, was an enrolled student at the community college in Oregon and committed suicide at the end of his shooting spree. Not much information has been released other than the victims:
-Lucero Alcaraz, 19
-Treven Taylor Anspach, 20
-Rebecka Ann Carnes, 18
-Quinn Glen Cooper, 18
-Kim Saltmarsh Deitz, 59
-Lucas Eibel, 18
-Jason Dale Johnson, 34
-Lawrence Levine, 67
-Sarena Dawn Moore, 44
Analysis: I later read that the gunman was attacking Christians. I am not sure if this is true or not, however no matter what the motive, shootings are never acceptable. School shootings happen way to often. If the gunman was suffering with some issues I feel as though he should've seen someone before making such a life-altering decision to himself and the victims. I grieve for the victims and their families and I can only hope that as more information is released, authorities get to the bottom of the shooting. If the gunman was attacking Christians, that would make this situation even more tragic than it already is. I'd like to think that we've made it past the days of religious persecution, but I know that isn't completely true. We've come a long way, yet we still have so much to do and accomplish in this world.

  1. This is terrible. I wonder if he really was attacking Christians because that's wrong. People these days make me worried. No one has respect for one another. -Kayleigh Smerud
