Muslim student invents a clock and gets arrested for bringing a "bomb" to school, Natalia Hernandez 9th

Ahmed Mohamed, a freshman at MacArthur High School in Irving with dreams of becoming an engineer, was excited to show his teachers a digital clock he had created from a pencil case. Instead, he was arrested, and charged for bringing a bomb to school. The police soon found out that the clock was practically harmless, and didn't press charges (and they also didn't apologize). Social media has shown a lot of support, president Obama has invited him to the White House, and many have called for the city of Irving to apologize. "If I was a Caucasian male, I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t have gotten arrested,” Ahmed said Monday. As of now he'd decided to change high schools and be home schooled meanwhile. Oh, and he's visiting the White House!

Apparently after 9/11 no Muslim kid can bring their inventions to school, especially their home-made clocks, or they can expect to be sent away handcuffed! He was obviously and unjustly profiled for being Muslim and deserves an apology from the teachers, school district, and police involved in the arrest. Acting like this is not going to keep anyone safe, why? Think the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962; the closest we ever got to a full-blown nuclear war because the U.S had dramatically panicked. A nuclear was is mutually assured destruction, it would cause the complete annihilation of both sides, and the way that it was dealt with almost caused mutually assured destruction. Again, people, paranoia and panic is not the answer. I hope that Ahmed's inspiration to become an engineer isn't dampened by this, because he's also part of America's future, unlike racist administrators, teachers, and police, who will hopefully stay in the past.

This blatant act of racism should not go unpunished. I too hope that his dreams of being an engineer are not hampered by this experience

  2. I think that this young boy should not have been sent away handcuffed or punished in any way, to a point It is good that people are more concerned about what is brought into the school, teachers should be on high alert for anything that looks suspicious, and you can't blame someone for doing so, especially after the mass amount of lives that were impacted in 9/11, I only think that this situation could have been handled a lot better.

  3. First of all, why did the staff call the police instead of a bomb squad? The threat of something that serious should be taken care of by professionals in that field. Second of all, it seems like the teachers almost wanted to embarrass and even harass him, which is just another blatant example of islamaphobia. (Bella Di Fazio pd:8)

  4. Racial profiling is another big issue within our country. It is awful that this boy was arrested based off of his race. The teacher saw that he was muslim automatically thinking his invention was a bomb and this is not ok. The way the whole situation was handled was not ok.
