From the end of this month to middle November, there will be a meteor shower, the Orinoid Meteor shower, visible to much of the United States. NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center will be live streaming the annual shower starting 10pm on Wednesday (here).
For as long as there have been humans to look up and see the meteoroids, there has been a recognized pattern. Some civilizations believed it was the spirit world or divine communicating with them, some recognized showers and comets as a foreshadow of what was to come (plague, fire, war, peace, luck, fortune, etc.), and others saw it as a way to keep time on a large scale. Now we know that this shower, like others, happens annually and can be predicted based on our position in the solar system in conjunction to the sun.

ReplyDeleteI always miss these events and then I kick myself in the shins because I really wanted to see them.
I agree with Katie, I usually fall asleep or forget all together. I do hope to witness an event like this one day.
