Meryl Streep's Suffragette Premiere Interrupted by Women's Rights Protesters - Erin O'Day

A group of protesters, called Sisters Uncut, laid down on the red carpet until security removed them at the London premier of Suffragette, where Meryl Streep stars as a women's rights activist. The demonstration was supposed to protest Parliament's recent decision to cut funding for domestic violence services, but it is not clear whether the group's actions were in response to the movie, or if they were simply using the red carpet to get exposure. Streep herself is a women's rights activist and she has recently spoken out about the lack of female critics in the movie industry. She also sent copies of a feminist book, "Equal Means Equal" to 535 members of congress, receiving only 5 responses.

I think it is so awful that this battle is still even necessary. I'm glad there are groups like Sisters Uncut and people like Meryl Streep to so bravely fight for equality for everyone. It is crazy to see how far we've come though, through the years. Women have been fighting this war forever, and brave women throughout history, like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton, have won many a battle, helping us get to where we are today. But there is still much more work to be done.

  1. The intentions behind the protest might have been unclear but at least now there is important coverage on women's rights. Just like racism, these injustice women have to face are still prevalent today. It didn't just go away in the early 20th century. We still have to prioritize women's need too otherwise we could be reverting back to a worse time.

  2. Even though the protest is confusing, it still brought needed media attention to women's rights. There's a long journey ahead for women.
