Summary:
United States students did not score well when tested on common and simple geography skills. Though students didn't score significantly lower than students in 1994, scores were still astonishingly low. In the article it is said that geography was taken out of many general education curricula for several years. Why was this done and what was the thought process behind this?
Analysis:
I think it's absolutely ludicrous that students scored so low on these tests. I remember when I was in the the 8th grade (age of students that were tested), feeling like my skills in geography were not sufficient, but now that I see that the subject was pretty much taken out of curricula, why I felt that way. Why would such an important thing be deleted? It is incredibly important that we see where things are in our world and why. Even though I wouldn't go as far to calling it censorship, it does slightly remind me of it, because it comes across as not receiving valuable knowledge and information.

This is a problem that should be addressed. If students score that horribly on a geography test, there is an issue. Geography should be better integrated in public school curriculum.
ReplyDeleteI don't know test are getting harder every year. Either the test is difficult or kids are just plain lazy which I highly doubt. Desiree smith period 4
ReplyDeleteI don't understand how they take a subject out of a curriculum but still test students on said subject and are surprised when scores are low. This is just another example of how the education system really needs to be fixed. (Bella Di Fazio pd:8)
