KANGAROO LOOSE IN NY Julia Woltjen (3rd period)

SUMMARY:
Buster the kangaroo, a one year old marsupial, recently had a weekend stroll in upstate New York. Animal Control is reporting that this little guy escaped through an open gate at the house he was vacationing at. Yes I say vacationing because Buster and his owner were on vacation at a friends house, which is greatness in it of itself. The little guy was found hopping around an Auto dealership's parking lot Saturday afternoon. The only reason workers saw it, was because a customer who was waiting outside said that he saw "a deer". They quickly realized Buster indeed wasn't a deer and called the authorities.

ANALYSIS:
In my opinion this story is great and also a little sad, because Buster finally got some freedom, but he had to escape his vacation house in order to do it. Now New York doesn't allow for marsupials to be had as pets but upstate New York does, which allows for this outrageous containment of a wild animal. If some person wants to buy an animal for their own personal entertainment, all they have to do is throw some cash out and boom, Kangaroo! This is in my mind outrageous. Kangaroos aren't meant to be held in city limits or any limits really, these are wild animals. Poor Buster just illustrates the fact that they need space and room to do their thing, not vacation at a friend's house. If you want to see a kangaroo, go to the zoo or fly to Australia, don't keep them as pets.

  1. I completely agree with you, wild animals are NOT and should not be pets. There's a reason why we domesticated dogs and cattle, and its because normally no wild animal would be a suitable companion, they're not meant to entertain people. They suffer when we keep them stifled like Buster.

Agreed! I dont think that any wild animals should be kept as pets and cooped up inside "vacation houses". Wild animals need to be wild, people need to realize that wild animals can not be robbed of their freedom, and should not be bought.

  3. You couldn't have said it better! A similar thing is going on about having lion cubs as pets! Well, that wouldn't end well. Lions are meant to run around in nature and not be kept up in a backyard.

  4. I feel so bad for this poor kangaroo. I am mad that its only chance at freedom was when it escaped from someones house. It is not like this family saw a kangaroo on the side of the street and, out of the goodness of their hearts, decided to give it a home. No, these people probably threw down the right amount of cash and made a kangaroo be shipped to them.
