Jaylon Mobley, Period 5 // Tennessee County's Commissioners vote against raising Confederate flag

Summary: Earlier today, Greene County, Tennessee voted on whether or not to raise the flag above their courthouse. The proposal was short-lived with 20 votes 'against', 1 vote 'for'.

Analysis: In a day in age, where people have fought tirelessly for years and years for this sort of article to never even be thought of, and yet it's somehow not only existent, consistent, and gravely underestimated, I think we need to sit down and evaluate what's really important. I don't understand (and, by all means, this may be due to a certain level of ignorance, perhaps) how it's of more significance to point out that we still have symbols of hate towards African-Americans by glorifying them over places where justice SHOULD be served, than to point out that just about a year ago, 4 black UNARMED men were shot to death in the same month by the people who are meant to protect and serve us. Seems like to me we need protection from the protection. Because I can assure you, taking those boy's lives didn't protect anyone or anything but the long-lived, unchanged and ludicrous assumption that all black men are liars, thieves, immoral beings. And for what? Why do we try our hardest to be civilized citizens? It's not so that hate flags can be taken by America's winds, grounded in America's soil, and over America's buildings. When you poke a lion with a stick, it roars, it mauls... it fights back. So don't poke it.
