At this point most of us have probably heard about the shooting at the Oregon community college. This article specifically relays the account of Anastasia Boylan, a student there who was shot in the back during the shooting. Before going into spinal surgery Anastasia told her father how the gunman came into the room shooting, then turned to the professor and said, "I've been waiting to do this for years", then shot him. Everyone in the class dropped to the ground, but the gunman told them to stand up. As he was reloading the gun he asked if they were Christian. "Good," he replied, "because you're a Christian, you're going to see God in just about one second,". And then he would fire.
This terrifies me. This is horrible. This is abhorrent. This is devistating. There are no words to describe what this is. When will it be enough? When will there finally be one too many shootings? When will one too many innocent people unnecissarily die? What do we need to do to get some regulations on people like this?? Mass shootings have happened way too many times to look at it as just a "bad apple" in a good bunch, anymore. This is a spoiled set. And it seems to be a trend now, to go into schools and theaters and churches and murder innocent people. Like somebody set the spark at Sandy Hook and now its spreading like a frantic fire. In a conference, President Obama spoke on the shooting, saying how, "this has become routine".
It scares me that massacres like this have become "routine"and that the idea of them have become almost common to us. It should not be that way! Every time there is a shooting, every time an innocent person is killed, we need to raise an uproar. We need to bring as much attention to this cause as possible. Those people should NOT die in vain. We can't look back on this in ten years and realize that thier deaths did nothing. We can't just sit back and watch these kind of things happen over and over. We need to DO something.
People say that gun control is a "controversial topic". But why is it? What is so controversial about preventing mass shootings? We need to stop and THINK. What is so important about handing out killing machines to any person on the street for "protective purposes". If a gunman breaks into your house are you really going to have enough time to say, "Hold on, Mr. Gunman, let me just get my gun, too. It's in the upsairs safe so this might take a minute. I'll go get it and then I need to actually put the bullets in. So ya hold off on the whole crazed shooting thing for a couple." No. That's not how the situation is going to go. And yes, I do realize that there are background checks when you buy a gun, but they are obviously not thorough enough because things like this happen every day.
It's not enough just to mourn the victims any more. We need to do something. We need to change something. We need to restrict who we hand out guns to in honor of the college students at Umpqua college, just starting on thier new road of aduthood. We need to have real, affective background searches to honor the victims of the shooting in the San Antonio theatre who just wanted to have a relaxing night out. We need to stop and think so we can prevent tragedies like Sandy Hook where innocent children, too young to even be accused of anything were murdered.
This has gotten way out of hand and we need to change now.
This event was so unfortunate. I agree that something needs to be changed about who can own a gun. I also think that mental health should be a primary factor in determining that.
ReplyDeleteThis is very well written. I agree with you that the U.S. should have more restrictions on who can get a gun. There has been too many mass shootings in the U.S. since Sandy Hook and that's completely unacceptable.
