On Saturday, Michael Santiago, a 25 year old Chicago father, was charged with felony child endangerment. His 6-year-old son accidentally shot his 3-year-old son while playing "cops and robbers." The illegally purchased and loaded gun had been wrapped in pajama pants and placed on top of the refrigerator. Santiago was at work during the time and the children's mother was at the store. Their grandfather was watching them and had sent them downstairs to get something and heard a loud pop minutes after. The 3-year-old died at the hospital. Santiago is a former gang member and had illegally purchased the gun. He is being held in lieu of $75,000 bond.
Shootings like this are very rare but very tragic. Children are around 19 times more likely to die in car accidents and 9 times as likely to drown as they are to be accidentally shot. It seems in this article that the author isn't really buying the whole story, and multiple others aren't either. To me, it seems quite difficult for a 6-year-old to climb on top of the refrigerator to reach the gun. Although this isn't impossible, it seems a bit questionable as to if there's more to the story. Gun control advocates say research shows children often know where weapons are hidden and weak state laws offer too little deterrent to careless storage of guns. I think that parents need to take action and make sure that all weapons are out of reach for their children to ensure that tragic accidents like this don't continue happening.

This just brings gun control and gun rights to prominence once again. How was this man able to illegally obtain a gun which now has caused such tragedy and heartbreak. It shouldn't be this easy for some to get guns. I personally don't mind guns but there has to be some compromise. The second amendment makes this harder but I believe that there is way to make home safer so things like this can be prevented.

Gun control is a very big important topic right now, but this is a different case because it was an accident. If people have guns in their house, especially with kids, they need to keep them secure and locked up. -Lia Kerkman 6
