"Federal Judge Strikes Down Oregon's Same-Sex Marriage Ban" - Camille Farrar

This article, written today, May 19, 2014, chronicles the recent developments in Oregon regarding same-sex marriages. Federal judge Michael McShane reversed an earlier ruling of 2004, which defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman exclusively. Gay rights activists awaited the decision outside eagerly and were extremely happy once they heard the news that same-sex marriage is now legal in Oregon. Many couples are very excited about the new opportunity to get married and have equal opportunities. There are many legal benefits that come with getting married rather than simply being together, and same-sex couples in Oregon will now be privy to these.
I am so glad McShane made this decision in the case! There are 18 states that now allow same-sex marriages, and only a little over a decade ago, no states allowed this. I believe we are making steps in the right direction, and, as one of the supporters in Oregon said, “Love won today”. This article and story made me happy and excited for all of the couples that now have the ability to get married and further create their lives together. I hope to hear more stories like this one in other states in the coming months and years.
