"alcohol kills one person very 10 seconds worldwide"- felicia padilla 5th period

Alcohol kills 3.3 million people from around the world each year. That is more people than are killed by AIDS, tuberculosis and violence combine.Alcohol causes one in 20 deaths every year. That includes drunk driving incidents, violence spurred by drinking, alcohol poisoning and much more. This actually equals one death every 10 seconds. And is equivalent to 5.9 percent of all deaths worldwide.HIV/AIDS, which is a major killer is only responsible for 2.8 percent of all deaths, while tuberculosis only causes 1.7 percent. As wealth in countries like China and India has increased, there has also been an increase in an usually low alcohol cosumption.Drinking is linked to liver and brain problems as well as some cancers. "Alcohol abuse also makes people more susceptible to infectious diseases."
People in the world's wealthiest nations, Europe and the Americas tend to drink more than people in poorer countries.Eastern Europe and Russia are home to the world's biggest drinkers. On average, every person older than 15  drinks 6.2 litres of pure alcohol in one year. Taken this into account, almost half of all adults  have never touched alcohol, and almost 62 percent say they haven't had a drink in the past year.Abstinence is usually prominent with certain religious beliefs and social norms, and muslim countries are virtually alcohol free.

Because alcohol is so readily available, I think people tend to forget the major risks involved. Alcohol is beginning to just be like a soft drink and people will have it with every meal. Because it has turned into a normal thing, people tend to forget it is actually harmful and it is good to be reminded that it can KILL you.

  2. Just as people convince themselves that they will only have one cookie only on this one day and it ends up turning into multiple cookies for multiple days, people easily convince themselves to have one glass of alcohol and they end up having much more. It helps us to be aware of the consequences of our actions so that we are able to make smarter decisions.
