Jane Velez-Mitchell wrote an opinion piece on the importance of climate change. She argues that the droughts, massive fires and tornadoes are too often explained away as isolated incidents as opposed to a collective result of man-made production. Velez-Mitchell: "Let's be clear. Climate change is here. And it's only going to get worse." The National Climate Assessment, compiled by three hundred experts on the subject, states that climate change is "already affecting every region of the country and key sectors of the economy." It calls for "urgent action" against climate change. Velez-Mitchell, while acknowledging the importance of this dissertation, contends that the media must step up to supplement the facts with a powerful emotional punch, one to convince the public to take action. She argues further that society needs to avoid putting a bag over the elephant in the room, saying that "the way we collectively live is just not sustainable." She notes that 97% of climate scientists agree that human-induced climate change is real.
This is an excellent article written on an overwhelmingly important subject. I'm glad that this issue is finally bursting through into the mainstream of public conscious, because it is devastatingly urgent. The effects are real; they are happening now. This is our issue; we will inherit this earth. And if action is not taken now, we'll be quite the collection of disappointed heirs.
