A young man named Dominic Gant, "a junior at Dowagiac Union High School in Dowagiac, Michigan," entered the cafeteria to receive a lunch from the school. Instead, he was humiliated in a very "public" manner- because he owed $4.30 in lunch funds, he was not allowed to have a lunch. A school official threw his lunch away- in front of his peers.
Although he offered to pay $2.50 of the fee that day and pay the other $2 the next, he went hungry all day. And not only did that happen, his name was already posted on a public list of students who owed, and the amount of money they owed to the school (district) for their lunch accounts.
Gant's mother, Amanda Keown, received a call from her son explaining what happened, so that a correction could be made- she was furious. Not only did she pay off her son's fees, she wrote a $200 check to the school to be dispersed evenly among the other students who had insufficient funds, and started the website: Care2.com to help with kids on a wider spectrum.
The website's description says that it is: "largest online community for healthy and green living, human rights and animal welfare."
Good things can come from bad experiences; they often do.

The mother's reaction seemed to be very mature and calculated. Her paying of the 200 dollars to the school to be distributed to all those who owe lunch money showed (hopefully) the school that the "issue" of having a negative lunch balance was dealt with by the school in a very childish manner. The mother is showing that she is not going to stoop to their level.
