Will Scotland Divorce England? Francesca Bartos 2nd

When the polls open on September 18, Scotland's People will decide the fate of the United Kingdom, or , if the votes swing that way, England and Scotland. If it happens it will not be a hostile separation, Scotland want to continue using British currency as well as maintain peaceful relations, after all they are stuck on the same Island.
You may be asking yourself, what this has to do with the US, besides slightly different diplomatic relations and a new country to Compete in the Olympics. Does the US not have a territory that used to be a nation of its own? Are there not people who are more proud to be Texan than American? What if Texas decided to hold polls for independence? I'm not saying that we will, or even that we should. Even if a decision were desired, would we even be allowed to vote on it? The real marvel of the Scotland-Britain vote is not that it is happening, or that it would be surprising if Scotland became a country. Its the diplomacy, the willingness to part ways if Scotland really desired it. So my question is, could the US let Texas go, if Texas wanted it? Or would there be violence and outrage upon the mere suggestion of it?

  1. Plenty of people, both native to Scotland and otherwise, already consider Scotland to be separate from England, despite the legal status. I'm surprised the vote is happening still. I guess it's like marriage - you already know what you are but you want to make it legally official. (But the exact opposite effect of a marriage in this case.)

  2. I think that the Civil War proved without doubt that no state shall be permitted to secede from the US. Whether that is a good or bad thing is a matter of perspective.
