A surprising fact: More Puerto Ricans live here on the mainland than in Puerto Rico. Nearly 1 million, in fact. This is because of a recent, large surge of Puerto Rican immigration in the years following the 2006 recession, which took a heavy toll on the island. Even government work, the biggest industry on the island, is extremely difficult to find a job in, these days, many educated, quite able Puerto Ricans finding it necessary to travel to the mainland to find work, even though many would prefer to remain home.
How interesting, it is sad that people have to leave their home.
