this isn't really recent history, but the article was recently written and it's interesting.
From 1944 to 1945, almost 80,000 German POWs were held in a camp on the shores of our very own White Rock Lake. The camp was made up of wooden cabins that had been built by members of the CCC at Winfrey Point. The German soldiers were part of Rommel’s Afrika Korp and were captured in Northern Africa. While they could not be forced to work, they would work in a repair shop set up at Fair Park, fixing everything from tents, to mess kits, to banging the dents out of helmets. When the war ended, they were all sent back to Europe, though at least one of the former POWs attempted, and eventually succeeded, in returning to the U.S. and (as he called it) "old Texas".
I find it kind of interesting that, even though they were soldiers, they were still willing to work for their enemy doing things that actually would've contributed to our effort. And that some of them would want to return to the place where they were kept prisoner.
