Apparently Delaware is not as boring as I always think it is. Well, the state may be in general, but this man certainly is not. A Delawarean by the name of Walter George Bruhl Jr. wrote his own obituary, leaving blanks for the date and place of death. Writing your own obituary is uncommon, but not unheard of. But the interesting part of this story is that his obituary is hilarious. He quotes the great and powerful Monty Python, from the famous (or infamous) Parrot Sketch, saying, "Walter George Brulh Jr. of Newark and Dewey Beach is a dead person; he is no more; he is berefit of life; he is deceased; he has rung down the curtain and gone to joing the choir invisible; he has expired and gone to meet his maker." He goes on to discuss his life and crack more jokes. In the end, he closes this obituary by asking people to "... do an unexpected and unsolicited act of kindness for some poor unfortunate soul in His name."
This is one of the best articles I've seen in a while. I love what this man did. Maybe I'm just biased because I consider myself a Monty Python enthusiast, but I love how he closed his life how he wanted, in his own words, without anyone else summing up his life. He knew he was going, so he wanted to go out with a bang. I love this idea, and sorry, I'll probably steal it when I get older. It's just so fantastic. Also, his child said when he read this, it helped ease the pain of losing his father. So not only was it hilarious, but it was also a good coping technique for the people left behind, so that who he was will never be forgotten by those around him. This really gives them a sense of closure, because after someone dies, the people who are left behind are the ones who are really hurt. The Person who is dead is no longer in pain. Whatever can be done to ease the pain for those who have lost someone dear to them I think is worth doing.

ReplyDeleteI love this so much. I agree I feel like its great that he got to talk about his own life especially since he knows it best. He actually got to express how he was really feeling.
