Recently Jimmy Carter released a statement along with a book about the effect of religion on abuse against woman. He sited different customs such as the catholic custom of not allowing women to be priests. He said this automatically puts women in an inferior position, encouraging men to treat women in an inferior manner. It basically came down to the fact that people pick and choose pieces of the bible to justify their behavior.
I think this is an extremely necessary examination of pertinent issues. Violence against women is constantly prevalent and on the rise. The first step towards equality of the sexes is reaching to the root of discrimination. He does not only address the slight separation of sexes in the US, but also the more extreme sometimes fatal discrimination that women face in other countries and cultures. I'm glad that such a important figure has stepped forward to address this issue, and doing so with such accuracy as to hopefully change it rather than just bring awareness.

He's onto something, but perhaps he should use his power/position to let a woman lead the way.
ReplyDeleteI'm a glad a U.S. leader of religious leaning called out this element of the dogma. This makes it much more difficult to argue against, from a religious standpoint.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you, Gloria. Social issues cannot be solved unless the root of the problem is addressed. Hopefully, Mr. Carter can use his influence as former U.S. president to help internationally cease the violence against women.
