"Westboro church's first protest after founder's death met by counterprotest," Carson Wright, 5th Period

Fred Phelps, pastor of the infamous Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), passed away this past Wednesday due to natural causes at the age of 84. Westboro Baptist, initially founded by Phelps and composed largely of his extended family, is notorious for picketing funerals with signs reading, "God Hates Fags," "Thank God For Dead Soldiers," "God Hates Sluts," "Thank God For 9/11," and other such stuff, was protesting--with their usual memorabilia--at a Lorde concert in Kansas City, Mo. this past weekend.
At the New Zealand pop artist's concert were counter-protesters organized to combat the WBC's efforts. However, their signs matched not those of the fundamentalist church; rather, they read, "Sorry for your loss," and "Live your Life and Be Awesome." The members of the WBC had no perceivable reaction to this.
Despite their hateful messages, many have found the WBC to ultimately be of positive influence; Mark Silk of ReligionNews.com stated that Phelps "made religious hostility to homosexuality repulsive."

There will be many who dance on the grave of Fred Phelps, seizing the opportunity to reciprocate the hate spewed for so long, hate that will no doubt be espoused for some time longer. The urge to do to this infernal church what this infernal church has done to others is absolutely understandable; in fact, maybe even deserved. Yet, what these counter-protesters have done is remarkable (one might even say Christ-like).
"Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." Martin Luther King, Jr.

  3. I'm glad that people took the high road and showed love rather than hate. You can't fight a positive message, so it leaves Westboro at a loss for response.

It's crazy to think that members of the Westboro Baptist Church legitimately believe they protest with signs reading discriminatory and hateful signs that glorify the murders of innocent civilians and American veterans in the name of GOD. It's repulsive and so disrespectful. It's sounds bad, but hopefully the founder's death will discourage or prevent future protests.

  5. Very true, revenge can never fully solve anything. An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind. I love the MLK quote as well. YOU go carson.
