Liam Wise- Economic Impact of Hurricane Harvey
The estimated 27 trillion gallons of water dropped on the Texas and Louisiana area brought about some of the most damaging floods in U.S. history. Some experts predict these damages will make Hurricane Harvey the most expensive natural disaster faced by the United States, surpassing Hurricane Katrina (Over $190 Billion). Even with others believing the price tag will come closer to Super-storm Sandy's (Around $70-90 Billion), the Bureau of Safety and Environmental Enforcement is barely surmising the full scope of the elemental fallout. With around 10% of manned oil platforms in the gulf evacuated, gas prices have risen. Just how much these atmospheric conditions affected the Gulf is still unclear, even to residents. Adding in the economic burden of displacement (with thousands forced to leave their homes), it looks to be a long road to recovery for the gulf.
