Larsen Nichols, DACA on the brink

http://www.cnn.com/2017/09/03/politics/daca-on-the-brink/index.html

Summary: Trump plans to end the Dreamers program, or DACA, originally designed by Barack Obama to allow immigrants who were brought to the U.S as children to apply for a two year visa so they don't have to fear deportation and can enjoy similar rights to U.S citizens. So far, Trump's opinion on the program has been back-and-forth, vowing first to rescind the policy immediately, and then later stating that it's a "very, very hard" decision to make. Republicans and Democrats alike are lobbying for Trump to delay this decision as Congress finds a compromise. Four proposals were introduced to Congress, but they already have a full month of dealing with Hurricane Harvey relief in addition to other issues.

Analysis:

This article was written by Jim Acosta, Mary Kay Mallonee, and Tal Kopan at CNN. Acosta is a Senior White House Correspondent currently covering the Trump administration, and Kopan is a political reporter for CNN politics. Their point of view is that this action from Trump is going to negatively affect many people's lives, and that Congress is going to have a difficult time finding a solution.

This article was produced this morning, presumably in Atlanta, Georgia, where CNN's headquarters are. Because so many events have yet to unfold and no finalized decision has been made yet, this article's credibility could change in time.

Before I read this article, I was aware of Trump's opinions on immigration, so this article is not a surprise to me. I understand this article more than I would have if I wasn't informed on his policies. This article reinforces my disagreement with Trump's opinions on immigration.

This article was most likely written to a more liberal audience, and would support preconceived left-leaning notions while challenging more conservative readers to view the situation in a different light. It's a negative article since it sheds a negative light on Trump and his policies.

This article was written to inform readers of Trump's pending decision regarding DACA and what the effects would be if the decision was carried out.

The article is trying to convey that action needs to be taken and a compromise needs to be found for the future of DACA.

The importance of this article is that it attempts to inform readers who may not have a clear understanding of what DACA is or what its affects on society are. If DACA were to be put out of effect, not only would hundreds of thousands of people's lives be uprooted, but the American economy would lose a significant part of its workforce. If Congress can't find a compromise that suits everyone, the effects of Trump's decision will be immense and very negative.

Trump's desire to remove illegal immigrants from the U.S is somewhat similar to Andrew Jackson's Trail of Tears. Jackson successfully removed thousands of natives from their homeland. The children of DACA did not chose to immigrate to the U.S; their families brought them, and since then this country has become their home. They have just as much right to be here as U.S citizens or the Native Americans who were displaced during the Trail of Tears.

  1. I agree that by taking apart DACA or even talk of doing so will destroy many immigrant children lives, as well as work opportunities in the U.S. I'm not surprised by this happening, but I am disappointed.

  2. You say in your analysis that you were already aware of trump's immigration policy, and thus were not surprised, but how did you react to his flip-flopping on this issue? Also you're perfect you're gorgeous love your hair hope you win

  3. I am so sickened by many of the actions that are being taken by the US, as this act will ruin many lives throughout our country. I saw this coming when he was elected, but I thought the US would not let him follow through with this.

  4. It's obvious that the result of the end to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals will be drastic to not simply the economy, but to the lives and families to those who benefit in creating a life here. Either America really is politically blind to suppress morally correct voices or Trump is actually a pile of racist rats embodying a flesh suit with a bad paint job.

  5. I thought your parallel to the Trail of Tears which took place during Andrew Jackson's presidency was very fitting and in more ways than listed. It wasn't quite Jackson's executive decision to exile Native Americans from their home land and territories, but that of annoyed Americans who just wanted them out of sight and Jackson, infamously the working man's president (his main appeal to Americans in his campaign), said, "sure." And here we are in 2017 where those who agreed with Trump's immigration policies during his campaign have noticed his wishy-washy opinions towards the removal of the DACA pressure him into making his move, as he loves making his supporters happy.
