How 9/11 is Still Affecting our Country Today: Hannah Karim

Sixteen years ago today, one of the biggest tragedies in the world struck in New York City and the  Pentagon. Two planes were hijacked by Islamic Extremists and were crashed into the Twin Towers in Southern Manhattan. This led to the collapse of one of the buildings completely, killing thousands of innocent bystanders, such as men and women just going to work, parents, children walking to school, and thousands of others. This caused major financial and economic stress and disaster for our country, our joining in the War on Terror, our involvement with Afghanistan (which is the longest running war in US history), the deportation of many innocent people, and other citizens immigrating out of our country. Another affect includes how extreme airport security is nowadays. Before 9/11, it was not unusual to show up for your flight 30 minutes before, since there were no long security lines, pat downs, and most people did not even have to show ID at any time. Box cutters were even permitted (the suggested weapon used by the hijackers of the plane). Lastly, there was a huge increase in web security by our government.
9/11 must never be forgotten, for it was one of the biggest tragedies this world has ever seen. It's social, economic, political and religious factors have changed the United States dramatically. It is important that we learn and remember things like 9/11, because we all need to be educated on these kinds of things from history, so we know how to move on and learn so nothing like it will ever happen again.

  1. Olivia Wall- I agree with your statement, 9/11 should never be taken lightly and should never be forgotten. It is such a rich part of our culture and shaped America into how we are run today. Also, America took charge to change its ways after this happened, like you mentioned, which I believe will help it to never happen as severely again.

  2. I agree that what happened on 9/11 completely changed views of Americans towards Middle Eastern countries in a negative direction. Islamophobia is seen throughout our society today and will definitely affect how future generations view other cultures.

    1. I find the part of your response regarding Islamophobia very important. Yes, our generation had to deal with terrorism, but hopefully future ones wont have to. That being said, even with possibility of no terrorism there will always be a fear of the middle east because the few that started it originated there.
