Tick Tock by Clara McLain

This story by Sabrina Tavernise is shedding light on the short life expectancy of Americans.  "Deaths before age 50 accounted for about two-thirds of the difference in life expectancy between males in the United States and their counterparts in 16 other developed countries, and about one-third of the difference for females. The countries in the analysis included Canada, Japan, Australia, France, Germany and Spain."
So why is this?  The abuse of alcohol and drugs could be a possibility as well as unhealthy food choices.  Firearm homicides are also 20 times higher in the U.S. than any other developed country.
American adults also has the highest rate of diabetes and young adults have the highest rates of sexually transmitted diseases.
All in all, Americans have the lowest possibility of surviving past 50.
I don't know if this is true or not.  I actually thought our life expectancies were longer than they have been in a while.  I understand most of us aren't as healthy as we should be, but will a big mac here and there take thirty years from our life?
