Isadora Lilly- Sororities Sue Harvard for Single-Sex Penalties

This Monday, several national sororities and fraternities sued Harvard for a rule created in 2016 which discourages students from joining all male or all female groups. One case was taken to the Boston federal court and one to the Massachusetts state court, with both arguing that the rule was based upon sexism and stereotype, as those who joined single-sex organizations were to be punished and negatively associated.

Concerning men, a 2016 report by the school claimed that all-men clubs had "deeply misogynistic attitudes" and were connected to issues surrounding sexual assault. Both all-men and all-women organizations are seen by the school as having little to no value. Nevertheless, the federal suit states that this policy is in violation of the 1972 law, or Title IX, which bans discrimination based on sex in schools which receive federal funding. There are still, however, restrictions for members of single-sex organizations at Harvard, including being prohibited from leading campus groups or becoming captains of sports teams, as well as the refusal of the college to endorse the students for reputable fellowships.

This controversy reminds me of the women's suffrage movement, as even though the United States was founded upon the idea of equality for all, women had to fight for the right to vote and hold public office, whereas here the 1972 law which was integrated into the development of Harvard is not respected and men and women must fight to earn certain rights which should already be available to them.

  1. This issue shows how our outdated laws can remain hiding under the surface, escaping their comeuppance by the modern times. I love your connection to the women’s suffrage movement, as this reminds us that we always have a couple more steps to go when pursuing equality.

  4. I think issues like this are important to talk about because it's clear that we are not finished with the women's rights movement in the United States.
