University of Florida Graduation Scandal

University of Florida apologizes after an inappropriate scandal at its graduation this past week. As students were called to receive their long awaited diplomas, many decided to do a celebratory dance. However, one faculty member did not approve of the performance, and a aggressively rushed the graduates off the stage. The incident caused many to call out the school on social media. Mackintosh Joachin, a student at the school, said, "This is absolutely disgusting, these students have paid more (than) $40,000 in tuition and if they want to dance for 4 secs then it's their prerogative." The usher's actions were hostile, as well as racially targeted. Nafeesah Attah, one among the students ushered off the stage said, "It was directly targeted and contingent upon your race. There were other students prior to us going up there who were with who did back-flips and took selfies, who did a spin on stage and they were not handled in the same regard." The university is currently issuing several apologies to the students involved.

This is so disappointing, it's time we stop "issuing apologies" and start implementing change. This event is similar to the Little Rock Nine. They were peacefully trying to attend Central High in Arkansas, when they were brutally attacked, discriminated against, and badgered simply on the basis of race. At the time a court order had demanded the desegregation of schools, but governor Orval Faubus wanted to prevent these nine students from attending the school at all costs. This event furthered the cause for the civil rights movement.
