college student suicide

A student death at Hamilton college has spurred some discussions of mental health at college campuses. While the president of the school offered condolences, and promised the school was best for him, his mother found out different. He had written in his journal about how he was failing out of classes, how the school was aware of his problems, but were slow to help. The number of college students seeking treatment for depression and anxiety has risen sharply over the past few years, and this is another example of why programs need to be better.

  1. I think that programs need to better monitor student wellness. Even just having an individual ask how someone's day is going could make a big difference. I really like how the dance cluster has "check-ins", and I feel like this needs to happen in more programs.
