This week, former Obama administration official Colin Kahl said that he and his wife were targeted by a mysterious spy organization because of his stance on the Iran nuclear deal. The operation, allegedly carried out by an Israeli intelligence firm. British newspaper "The Observer claims that it was now-president Donald Trump who ordered a smear campaign out on Kahl, in order to discredit both he and his information about Iran and the nuclear deal. Others have said that it was private defense companies who really organized the operation, to the same end.
In any case, it is incredibly alarming that, in 2018, government officials have to worry about potential blackmail, intimidation or smear operations carried out by corporations for political purposes, or even by the President of the United States.
These tactics are reminiscent of the political corruption and wheeling and dealing of the Gilded Age; with politicians, mob bosses, and moguls all being essentially interchangeable. Woah, yup, thats today!
