Sophia Jalilvand: How one county slashed sugary drink sales

Summary: One county in central Maryland (Howard county) has started a three-year plan to make TV ads, digital marketing, direct mail, outdoor ads and social media against sugary drinks. In the area, soda sales decreased by 20% and fruit drinks by 15%. Nikki Highsmith Vernick, CEO of the Horizon Foundation, is a nonprofit organization that supports this campaign, which is clearly working. This is an especially powerful movement considerig that one in every four kids in the area is considered at an unhealthy weight. The campaign targets drinks with added sugars, such as sodas and artificially sweetened juices. There has also been about a 1-2% decrease in orders of sugary drinks nationwide in the past three years.

Analysis: It is nice to know that our country is becoming more health-conscious and making better choices. The fact that Howard county has taken such drastic steps to improve the health of their citizens and that they have had such a major impact on their people. I think that more counties should adopt this strategy and we should consider even making a similar nationwide campaign to improve our health.
