Lauren Cargill - Boy Finds Huge 7.44 Carat Diamond in Arkansas State Park

Summary: At  Crater of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas a 14-year-old boy named Kalel Langford found a 7.44 Carat Diamond. The park is designed for tourists to come in and try their hand at diamond hunting. Equipment is available for rent and the rest is up to the guests. The boy was able to find his huge diamond in just 30 minutes. He was walking along the river bank when he looked down and noticed a sparkly brown rock the size of a pinto bean. Though the stone was brown and frosty, he knew it was special. He took it to be examined and found he had discovered the largest brown diamond in 40 years and the seventh largest diamond to be found at the park. Kalel named the diamond the Superman Diamond and took it home as a souvenir.

Analysis: Kalel Langford is really lucky! I was actually at the park they day after the diamond was found. They told us that 20% of the diamonds there are actually just found by people walking around, rather than digging or sifting. My family and I looked for about an hour but we didn't find anything. We met some people that go out to the park all day every day in hopes of striking it rich. The park is the only one of its kind in the US. This could relate to the Amarillo Starlight Diamond which was found at the park in 1956. It was 15.36 carats. Like the Superman Diamond, it was found just by walking around.
